We’ve come a long way from clay amphorae and green glass. These days, you’ll see more and more BPA-free plastic bottles on shelves, and I’ll be honest — I think they’re a step in the right direction. That might ruffle a few traditionalist feathers, but hear me out.
What’s the Deal with BPA-Free?
BPA (bisphenol A) is a chemical once widely used in plastics — and it’s been linked to hormone disruption and other health risks. BPA-free plastics ditch that chemical, and that’s absolutely a good thing. Some people worry about microplastics, and they’re right to — heat and time can degrade plastic. But here’s the key point: if you’re buying real extra virgin olive oil and actually using it the way you should (generously and often), it’s not going to sit around long enough for that to matter.
And as long as it’s BPA-free, stored in a cool, dark place, and you’re not heating the plastic — your oil is safe, your antioxidants are intact, and your meals are singing.
Why I Like Squeezable BPA-Free Bottles
Not only are these bottles lightweight and travel-friendly, they’re also less wasteful in practice. You don’t risk breaking glass, and honestly, it’s easier to control the pour, especially for home cooks.
Glass is still a great option — especially dark-tinted glass. Stainless steel is elite too. But for everyday home use? Especially in households where EVOO is flowing like it should be?
A well-made BPA-free squeezable bottle is not a compromise — it’s practical, efficient, and modern. And let’s not forget: olive oil is meant to be consumed, not collected. Don’t buy a bottle to sit on a shelf like a wine you’re “saving for a special day.” The special day is today — use it.
And the Environment?
Sure, glass is more recyclable. But BPA-free plastics weigh less, reduce carbon in shipping, and in many cases, are recyclable too. It’s a balance — and one I think makes sense when the oil isn’t sitting for months.
We should respect tradition but not be afraid of evolution. If BPA-free plastics help more people use real EVOO daily, and make it more accessible, that’s a good thing. Just make sure the bottle says “extra virgin”, has a harvest date, and ideally comes from a producer who cares about what’s inside.
And then? Pop it open and pour generously.
