Look, I’m not here to ruffle feathers but one thing I’ve learned about olive oil is this, the real stuff just ain’t cheap honey.
I keep seeing bottles on the shelf for $5, $6… big ol’ liters labeled “Extra Virgin.” Sorry, but no. Not unless something fishy’s going on. Real EVOO takes work, you’ve got to grow healthy trees, pick the fruit by hand, press it right away and store it properly. That doesn’t come for pennies.
If they’re selling it cheap, they’re either cutting corners or cutting the oil. Period.
Now I’m not saying you need to break the bank but if you’re paying less than what you’d spend on a good bottle of wine, you’re probably not getting the good stuff.
Do yourself a favor and flip the bottle around. Look for a harvest date. A real producer’s name. A country, not a list of three. And if it just says “bottled in Italy,” be careful that doesn’t mean it was grown there.
Anyway, that’s my two cents. I’d rather have one honest bottle than five fake ones.

Feeding 5 kids means I’m always watching the budget but I learned the hard way that cheap olive oil is just throwing money away. Bought the $6 bottles for ages thinking I was being smart. Tasted like nothing, probably had zero of the actual health benefits I was paying for. Now I buy one good bottle and actually use less because the flavour is there. Marketing brain kicking in though, those cheap bottles are designed to trick you. Big “EXTRA VIRGIN” on the front, fine print tells the real story. Classic bait and switch. If you’re gonna spend money on something labelled healthy, at least make sure it’s actually the real thing.
You got it exactly right about using less when the flavor is actually there. That’s what people don’t realize. A good bottle might cost more up front but you’re not drowning your food in it trying to get some taste out of nothing. Five kids though, I hear you on the budget. Nothing wrong with saving money where it makes sense. Just not on the oil if you can help it.
